While planning my bucket list and thinking about dog road trip essentials, I realized I was so excited about traveling that I had completely forgotten about Buck.
I had been traveling for years with Brandon, but now my new traveling partner has no clue what he’s getting into—except the front seat of my car.
And he LOVES going for rides.
With his seat-belt attachment and harness, he’s already pretty well prepared for riding in the car and hiking. He’s actually a really good hiking partner.
Now it’s time for me to get a little more prepared.
With the RV being on hold until spring, I’m limited to what I can comfortably carry in the SUV. I don’t want to pack half the house every time Buck and I decide to take off for the day. I want useful things that will make our trips less stressful, more practical and easier to organize.
Apparently, Buck needs an Amazon-approved wish list. LOL.
Buck’s Road Trip Wish List 🐾
Some things we already have and use. Others are things I realized we’re going to need before we start getting very adventurous.

Dog Road Trip Essentials for Buck
Collapsible silicone dog bowls
This one is going on the shopping list. I need something that doesn’t take up much room but gives Buck his own water and food bowls wherever we stop. Collapsible bowls seem perfect for throwing into his travel bag.
Small sealed food container
I don’t want to drag an entire bag of dog food along on a day trip or weekend getaway. A small airtight container should give me enough room for what he needs without taking up half the SUV.
Dog travel bag or backpack
Apparently Buck really does need luggage. 😂 I’d like one bag where I can keep his bowls, food, treats, leash, waste bags, towel and other supplies so I’m not hunting through the car every time he needs something.
Small fast-drying towel
It’s Buck. There will eventually be mud. Enough said. I chose a fast-drying towel because he’ll have to get back into the SUV after our adventures. I want something that will dry quickly instead of staying damp in the car and getting musty
Waste bags and holder
Not exciting, but definitely necessary—especially when we’re hiking or visiting parks.
Safety and Hiking Gear for Buck
Dog first-aid kit
This is one I hadn’t really thought about until I started planning longer hikes. If we’re away from home and Buck cuts a paw or gets a minor injury, I want basic supplies with me instead of wishing I’d packed them.
Coastal harness
Buck already has a harness that I really like for hiking. It’s comfortable for him, gives me better control on a trail and has held up well. This is one item that’s already earned its place in the SUV.
Seat-belt leash
This is another thing we already use. Buck loves riding in the front seat, but that doesn’t mean he gets to ride unsecured. His seat-belt attachment connects him to his harness and keeps him from wandering around the vehicle while I’m driving.
Dog tags and veterinary information
Before we start traveling farther from home, I want to make sure his identification is current and keep a copy of important veterinary information with his travel supplies.

I’m sure this list will grow once Buck and I actually start traveling together. There will probably be things I buy that turn out to be brilliant and others that make me wonder why I thought I needed them in the first place.
That’s part of the adventure.
I’ll update this list as we travel and learn which dog road trip essentials actually work for us, what doesn’t and what earns a permanent spot in Buck’s travel bag.
For now, though, I think my traveling partner is going to be better prepared than I am.
Maybe I need an Amazon wish list too. LOL.
